Fremont County officials and law enforcement warn of deadly fentanyl drugs

RIVERTON, WY – Local authorities and law enforcement are warning residents of a dangerous and deadly increase in drug-related incidents, including fentanyl and opioids. In response to emergency calls, law enforcement in Fremont County is seeing an increase in the need for Narcan use and, sadly, two deaths since June 2021.

“Recreational use of fentanyl is deadly, quite simply; street use of this substance greatly increases the likelihood of sudden death. It’s not if it will happen it is whenSays Fremont County Sheriff Ryan Lee.

According to the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), fentanyl is a synthetic opioid 80 to 100 times more potent than morphine. The pharmaceutical fentanyl was developed for the treatment of pain in cancer patients. Due to its potent opioid properties, fentanyl is also being diverted for abuse. Medications should only be taken as prescribed by your doctor and never rely on medications bought or sold to anyone other than your pharmacy. How it affects each individual varies and a single pill has the potential to be fatal.

“In June, the Fremont County coroner’s office responded to two confirmed fentanyl deaths. As the recreational use of this drug continues, we anticipate more but hope the community understands how deadly it can be, ”said Erin Ivie, Deputy Chief Coroner.

The Fremont County Prevention Program has partnered with local law enforcement, public entities and organizations to raise awareness of this deadly crisis. To support this effort, a dedicated education and resources webpage can be found at fremontcountyprevention.com/fentanyl.
