Justice Department seeks extension of Khaleda’s prison sentence

Khaleda Zia

The Ministry of Justice has come out in favor of a six-month extension of the period of suspension of the prison sentence of BNP Chairman Khaleda Zia.

“The Security Service Division under the Ministry of Interior will publish a notification in the Official Gazette in this regard,” Justice Minister Anisul Huq said.

Khaleda Zia will undergo treatment at home and she will not be allowed to travel abroad during this period, he said.

Recently, Khaleda’s family filed a petition with the Ministry of Interior asking for his unconditional release. They also asked the interior minister for permission to allow Khaleda to travel abroad for treatment.

Amid the coronavirus outbreak, the government suspended Khaleda’s prison term for six months by decree on March 25, 2020.

The government has repeatedly extended his parole in the two corruption cases.

The former prime minister was sent to Dhaka’s Old Central Jail after being sentenced to five years in prison by a special court in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018.

She was convicted in a second bribery case later.

The 76-year-old BNP leader has been staying at her Gulshan residence since her release from prison. A special team of his personal doctors supervised his treatment.
