ISLAMABAD: The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) bill has been finalized and has been sent to the Ministry of Law and Justice for verification, said the secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Sardar Ejaz Khan Jaffar.
Speaking at a meeting chaired by (NCM) President Chela Ram Kewlani, he said the ministry would write a letter to all relevant institutions seeking their advice. The secretary said the chairman of the property board of Evacuee Trust would brief the NCM on its plans to help minorities. The committee discussed various issues related to the Pakistani non-Muslim population. NCM has asked the Human Rights Department to hand over the Christian Marriage and Divorce Bill to them.
NCM President Chela Ram Kewlani has said that forced marriage, underage and without guardians’ permission, is a social problem. He urged the provinces to implement marriage laws in their respective jurisdictions.
Kewlani said governors, chief ministers, chief secretaries and inspectors general from all provinces would be contacted for swift implementation of the NCM’s recommendations. The NCM has called for nominations for the induction of a new minority member to its seat vacated by a Christian member due to personal commitments.
