Target to release eligible defendants by August 15: Union Law Ministry – Dinamani

Union Justice Minister Kiran Rijiju said “the target has been set to free deserving prisoners by August 15”.

Kiren Rijiju speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the First All India District Legal Services Commission Officers Meeting in Delhi said:

A special campaign to identify and recommend defendants eligible for release was launched on the 16th by the National Commission for Judicial Services. As a result, District Legal Services Commission officers are required to hold a weekly defendant review meeting. A review of the state of affairs should be discussed, including filing bail applications with the courts if necessary.

These meetings will be held until August 13. They are being carried out with the aim of releasing the maximum number of pretrial detainees by August 15. Rijiju said the special measure was taken as the country is about to celebrate its 75th Independence Day.

“New Legal Aid Program for the Poor”: To provide legal aid to poor and disadvantaged people who are accused in cases, a new program is being launched on behalf of the National Commission for Legal Services, the Acting Chairman of the the UULalith Supreme Court Commission and Justice.

In this regard, he said in the above broadcast: A legal aid system will be set up in each district for the poor who cannot hire private lawyers. Under this new scheme, lawyers will be appointed to defend the needy poor. 350 districts have been proposed to implement this program in the first phase. Districts will be prioritized based on infrastructure facilities and other opportunities. He said a project has been started to ensure an electronic library in each district legal services authority.
