Justice Minister Anisul Huq, who is currently in the United States, gave his opinion on the matter a few days ago.

“I have sent the relevant file with my notice to extend the suspension of his prison sentence to the Home Office who will now issue a notification to that effect,” the justice minister said.

“Khaleda would not be able to go abroad and she has to get treatment at home,” he added.

Anisul Huq said the government released the BNP leader after suspending her prison sentence under Section 401(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

Khaleda was released from prison on March 25, 2020 after the government suspended her prison term for six months.

She was released from prison at a time when the world was being hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Khaleda landed in prison on February 8, 2017, after being sentenced to five years in prison by a special court in Dhaka in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. On October 30 the following year, the High Court increased his sentence to 10 years after rejecting his appeal in the case.

The former prime minister was found guilty by another special court in Dhaka in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case on October 29, 2018. She was sentenced to seven years in rigorous imprisonment by the court.
